Latina boxers to fire up the ring in Panama

WBA super bantamweight female world champion Chanttall Martinez of Panama is set to make the first title defense of her black and gold crown against 21-year-old Colombian "La Ni?a" Paulina Cardona on July 2 at the Feria de San Jose de David in Chiriqui, Panama.

"Chanttall will defend her world title on July 2 in her own hometown province of Chiriqui (Panama's eastern province bordering Costa Rica). "She will showcase her boxing talents before her fans during the celebration of her famous town's fiesta. It's gonna be an exciting night of boxing," said the fight's promoter Mr. Rogelio Espi?o, Panama's promoter of the year.

The WBA officials for this world title fight are: Judges: Ms. Carla Caiz of California, USA, Judge Ms. Reina Urbaez of Venezuela, Judge Mr. Gustavo Jarquin of Nicaragua. Supervisor Ms. Norioles Gil. Referee in command will be veteran third man Mr. Roberto Ramirez of Puerto Rico.

The single 20-year-old Panamanian fight girl Chanttall Martinez (13-4, 5KO's) claimed her WBA super bantamweight female world belt last April 2 by scoring a well-deserved unanimous decision victory over foxy veteran Lisa "Bad News" Brown of Canada.

The Martinez-Brown rumble last April 2 was an intense non-stop action combat in which the more aggressive and effective Chantall was the most dominant and effective warrior.

It was the much younger Martinez who dished out the higher punching ratio over her experienced and tough 40-year-old opponent throughout the exciting 10-rounds of toe-to-toe close quarters war at a full capacity Roberto Duran Arena in Ciudad de Panama.

Official scores for the Martinez-Brown title fight from the WBA judges were: Luis Pabon of Puerto Rico 97-93, Ted Gimza of Illinois 95-94 and Steve Weisfeld of New Jersey 95-94 all in favor of the new WBA champion Chanttall Martinez.

That night, "Bad News" Brown (18-5-3) lost the world crown that she won by defeating the popular Filipina fighter Ana Julaton (8-2-1, 1 KO) in Ontario, Canada, last year.

Chantall Martinez, nicknamed "La Fiera", became the first fighter from Panama's Chiriqui Province to reach a world title in boxing has said to be willing to accept challenges from the best fight girls in the world.

It includes unifying against reigning Filipina WBO world champion Ana "The Hurricane" Julaton or Mexico's WBC world champion Ana Maria "La Guerrera" Torres (25-3-3, 14KO's).

In past months Chantall Martinez has been interested in fighting South American boxing legend former WBC super bantamweight champ Marcela "La Tigresa" Acu?a.

But the glamorous Marcela Acu?a has recently hung up her pink boxing gloves to enter another kind of fight: politics in her native Argentina.

Should the Panamanian combat girl Chanttal Martinez defeats her July 2 Colombian foe, a possible second title defense could be staged against unbeaten 25-year-old WBA interim bantamweight champion Yesica Patricia Marcos "La Leona" (17-0-1, 5KOs) of Mendoza, Argentina.

Despite coming from Panama, a Latin American country where football and baseball are the top sports, Chanttall Martinez has felt a passion for the sport of boxing since early age. Now she lives her sport dreams by joining two of her fellow countrymen as reigning boxing world champions.

The two other Panamanians currently boxing world champions: WBA cruiserweight king Guillermo "El Felino" Jones (37-3-2, 29KOs), and WBA bantamweight super champ Anselmo "Chemito" Moreno (31-1, 11KOs).

Anselmo "Chemito" Moreno is the bantamweight super champion willing to battle sensational superstar "The Filipino Flash" Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18KO's) for the unification of the world bantamweight titles.

Tthe 25-year-old Chemito Moreno made the 8th defense of his bantamweight WBA belt via 8th round technical KO over former world champion Lorenzo Parra (31-3-1, 18KO's) at the Roberto Duran Arena in Ciudad de Panama last Friday.

Another popular Panama fighter, former WBA super champion Celestino "Pelenchin" Caballero (34-3, 23KO's), will battle for the WBA featherweight championship against champion Argentina's Jonathan Barros (32-1, 18KO's).

The interesting Caballero vs Barros world title clash will take place also on Saturday July 2 in the hometown of "Yoni" Barros, Mendoza, Argentina.
