TRAVERSING THE DONAIRE ROUTE TO BOXING IMMORTALITY

PhilBoxing.com

Tungod, Inabanga, Bohol ? With his recent smashing victory over the previously unstoppable Fernando ?Cochulito? Montiel of Mexico, ?Filipino Flash? Nonito Donaire, Jr. has certainly caught much of the attention of the boxing world. However, Donaire must not rest on his laurels. This is just a minor step towards a steep and daunting route towards boxing greatness.

Hereunder is a catalog of what could very well be Nonito Donaire, Jr?s to-do list, if he so desires to solidify his stature in the rich history of the sweet science of boxing.
1. Become undisputed in the bantamweight division by challenging the winner of the forthcoming "bantamweight tournament" between Agbeko and Mares. If he really wants to get out of Pacquiao's shadows, then he could start by doing something that the Pacman was unable to do so far in his career and that is to become an undisputed champion in a particular weight division.

2. Move up to 122lbs and challenge the weakest champion for his first assignment in this higher weight class. This will help him test the super bantamweight waters as well as set up a bigger stage for yet another unification bout against a more formidable champion later on. He doesn't have to become an undisputed champion at 122lbs, but of course it would be great for his resume if he can do that... but taking into consideration the mouth-watering money fights up north, I have serious doubts that he'd stay longer at 122lbs.

3. Challenge Israel Vasquez or Rafael Marquez in the 126lb-division. Having any of these fighters' names in his list of victims will certainly boost Donaire's stock if he is looking to line himself up in the pantheon of the all-time greats when his career is all said and done.

4. By this time, featherweight giants Juan Manuel Lopez and Yuriorkis Gamboa could have already fought one another, with the winner as the undisputed king of the featherweights. This will arguably be the biggest fight of Donaire's career and will define where he sits in the annals of boxing. If successful, he will certainly become the face of the sport, much like Pacquiao is at this point in time.

5. Follow the Pacquiao route, this time, challenging name fighters in the heavier weight class to collect titles and further his position in the pantheon of the all-time greats!
Of course, all this is easier said than done and needs a great deal of effort, focus, dedication, and perhaps luck on Nonito Donaire's part. Are all these achievable? Definitely! Is Donaire up for it? Only time can tell!
