PENALOSA SET TO FIGHT IN CHI-JUAREZ CARD
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Tue, 12 Jul 2005
Inactive for almost a year now, ex-WBC superfly champ Gerry Penalosa tries to get back into the squared arena as he takes on a soon-to-be-announced foe on August 20 at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, USA.
"I'm still waiting for the fight contract," Penalosa said, not holding his breath especially following a botched fight in the US recently arranged by his new business manager Murad Muhammad.
However, the southpaw holder of the fringe WBF superfly title was quick to announce that his upcoming fight will be in the undercard of the much-anticipated In jin Chi-Rocky Juarez showdown for the WBC featherweight title.
Chi (30-2, 18 KO's) versus Juarez (23-0, 16 KO's) will be a "proxy war" of sorts, as Chi is being business managed by Murad Muhammad while Juarez is managed by Shelly Finkel. Muhammad and Finkel had figured in a much-publicized power struggle over pound-for-pound icon Manny Pacquiao which resulted in a court battle wherein Muhammad was made to pay an undisclosed amount of monies and asked by the presiding judge to sever ties with the Filipino boxing icon.
Penalosa (48-5-2, 33 KO's) last saw action on November 27, 2004, demolishing Thai Bangsaen Sithpraprom in seven rounds to win the WBF 115-lb title.
