Filipino David Ray Sarmiento finishes 2nd in Germany chess tilt

David Ray Sarmiento finished in second place at the B division of the Grenke Chess Open 2025 held from April 17-21, 2025 at the Kongresszentrum Karlsruhe,Germany.
Sarmiento had 8.0 points on account of seven wins and two draws, the same output of Germans Tim Lehmann, Elman Tariverdiyev and David Tulchynsky, and Daniel Aziz of the Netherlands.
The 20-year-old Novo Ecijano chess wizard won the runner-up honors after the tie break points were applied to bring home the 1,500 euros for his efforts.
Joscha Schmitt-Schott of Germany took the title and 2,000 euros plus a trophy with 8.5 points in nine outings.
"Even I myself am shocked by my 7-game win streak. I only came there for fun but I ended up getting 2nd Place out of 1195 in Open B, which I am very happy with," said Sarmiento, a 2nd year Nursing Student at Caritas Rheine in Lingen, Lower Saxony, Germany.
"I wanted to make it a perfect 9/9 to pull a Bobby Fischer pero na worn out na po ako sa last day and ended up drawing the remaining two rounds," added the Santo Domingo, Nueva Ecija native.
Sarmiento defeated Fritz Zoellmer of Germany (Round 1), Udo Ploder of Germany (Round 2), Faruk Osmanovic of Germany (Round 3), Florian Gutfeisch of Germany (Round 4), Eugen Pelezki of Germany (Round 5), Serafin Jacob of Germany (Round 6) and Daniel Reksten of Germany (Round 7).
He split the points with Paul Niebler of Germany (Round 8) and Daniel Aziz of the Netherlands (Round 9).
His next tournament will be at the Internationale Unterlände Schachtage scheduled on July 31-August 3, 2025 in Heilbronn, Germany.-Marlon Bernardino-
