Ronald Dableo rules Chinese chess tilt By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Thu, 20 Feb 2025 QUEZON CITY---Ronald Dableo emerged as the champion in the 2025 Strategy and Analytical Skills Games Chinese Chess or Xiangqi tournament last Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at the Department of National Defense (DND) Multipurpose Center in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. He had a near-perfect campaign after tallying 4.5 points in the five-round Swiss system competition. Dableo defeated Jefferson Ibay, Carlo Magno Rosaupan, Brian Butcher Carreon and Jeffrey Sam Misolania in the first and four rounds, respectively. He snapped his four-match winning streak when he had a draw against Kevin Arquero in the fifth and final round. Arquero went on placing second overall with 4.0 points. "I Am happy with my performance," said Dableo, a certified International Master in chess who is also the head coach of the multi-titled University of Santo Tomas Chess Team. The third place went to Jan Nigel Galan with similar 4.0 points The fourth to 10th placers were Kevin Mirano (3.5), Misolania (3.0), Rosaupan (3.0), Renaro Cruz Jr.(3.0), Sheider Nebato (3.0), Lennon Hart Salgados (3.0) and Rommel Llavanes (2.5). According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, Xiangqi, commonly known as Chinese chess or elephant chess, is a strategy board game for two players. It is the most popular board game in China. Xiangqi is in the same family of games as shogi, janggi, Western chess, chaturanga, and Indian chess. "Xiangqi is part of the Chinese tradition and for many years it has been played in the Philippines and around the world," said Chief Arbiter Jan Emmanuel Garcia, a certified International Master in chess.
