Mirano, Bernardino, Alidani shine in Penang chess tilt

Penang, Malaysia – Aklanon chess player Jan Francis Mirano from Banga, Aklan clinched 5th place in the prestigious 16th Penang Heritage City International Chess Open 2024, held from December 23 to 27 here at the UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College (Georgetown).
Mirano's performance was highlighted by impressive victories against strong contenders, including AFM Sivanesan Paranam, Jaishivan (1687) of Malaysia, Wismeijer, Jeroen (1827) of the Netherlands, Yang, Lanqin (1819) of China, Chong, Jin Cheng (2002) of Malaysia, and IM Mohammad, Nubairshah Shaikh (2417) of India.
He also held his ground with draws against strong international masters, including IM Sharan, Rao (2405) of India, IM Gunawan, Ronny (2227) of Indonesia, and IM Polschikov, Alexey (2335) of Russia.
His lone defeat came at the hands of the eventual tournament champion, IM Poh, Yu Tian (2444) of Malaysia.
The tournament proved pivotal for Mirano and boosted his FIDE rating by 43 points.
Meanwhile, National Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. of Quezon City/Mandaluyong City and Nation Master Leonardo Alidani of Cebu finished seven and 11th placers. Bernardino undefeated record with 4 wins and 5 draws in the Challenger section.
