LA Lakers Kick Off Season with Three Firsts, Beat Minnesota Timberwolves 110-103

PhilBoxing.com

The Los Angeles Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves actually kicked off the Western Conference regular season yesterday after Boston Celtics formally opened the new season with an easy win over the New York Knicks 132-109 in Boston.

The Lakers achieved many first in the game held in Los Angeles -- its first win 110-103 over Minnesota, giving debuting coach JJ Reddick his first win. Most importantly, the Lakers gained the historic distinction of having the first father and son -- Lebron and Bronny James playing together in a game.

But the Lakers first win was made possible by the first double double monster game of the season by center Anthony Davis who scored 36 points and 16 rebounds apart from registering 4 assists, 1 steal and 3 blocks -- including one against the reigning Defensive Player of the league Rudy Gobert.

The Lakers trailed in the first quarter, 22-23 but detonated a 33-19 bomb to take the first half with much to spare, 55-42. With three minutes left in the period, Reddick fielded in Bronny to join his father Lebron James. Lebron took the opportunity to set up Bronny for a three point shot but Bronny missed his first shot. Bronny however redeemed himself by playing tough defense on T-Wolves main scorer Anthony Edwards and forcing him to miss his shot.

Minnesota rallied in the third to narrow the Lakers lead to single digit, 74-82 but Edwards was the only one who was consistently scoring. New additions from New York Julius Randle and Donte DiVinzeno were struggling offensively perhaps still fitting into their new team. Gobert meanwhile could have been missing his high scoring Twin Tower partner Karl Anthony Towns, now with the Knicks.

The Lakers merely exchanged baskets with the Timberwolves who were likewise troubled by turnovers the entire game to preserve the win.

Rui Hachimura backed up Davis with 19 points and 7 rebounds while James chipped in 16 points and 6 boards. DeAnthony Russell did not score much (9pts) but had a team high 5 assists. Guard Austin Reeves nearly had a double double with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Rookie Jaxson Hayes made his little time count pouring 10 points and hauling 5 rebounds.

For Minnesota, Edwards topped in scoring with 26 points while Gobert tended the boards with 14 rebounds plus 13 points. Randle had 16 points, 9 boards and team high 4 assists. Nickel Alexander Walker and big man Nazir Reid added 14 and 12 plus a combined 9 rebounds. DiVinzenzo managed 10 points in the losing effort.
