Tabernilla rules 8th Eastern Asian Youth Chess Championship 2024 - U16 division in Penang, earns IM norm and FM title

Penang, Malaysia---Tyrhone James Tabernilla has bagged the boys’ under-16 crown Standard competition in the 8th Eastern Asian Youth Chess Championship 2024 held at Cititel Hotel in Penang, Malaysia on Saturday, July 20, here.

The 16-year old Tabernilla, a Grade 11 student of De La Salle Santiago Zobel School Vermosa scored 7.0 points on account of 5 wins and 4 draws after 9 rounds to rule the event.

The Imus City pride Tabernilla defeated Junze Chen of China (Round 1), Wei Yang Lim of Malaysia (Round 2), Burentegsh Aldar of Mongolia (Round 3), Io Aristotle Nikolai Calica of the Philippines (Round 6) and Keith Adriane Ilar of the Philippines (Round 9).

He drew with Wang Ip Boris Chan of Hongkong (Round 4), Le Minh Hoang Huynh of Vietnam (Round 5), Dianqi Lin of China (Round 7) and Feng Wei Ferris Lim of Malaysia (Round 8).

“I am very happy with my victory because almost all of the top players in Asean and Asia joined the tournament," said Tabernilla.

"I would like to thank De La Salle Santiago Zobel School Vermosa, Aksyon Atleta Imus Chess Team, my father Engr. Herbert Tabernilla, my mother Sherill Tabernilla and my coaches WIM Jodilyn Fronda, IM Paulo Bersamina, Jayson Visca, Ederwin Estavillo and Napoleon Ramos for supporting my participation in the 8th Eastern Asian Youth Chess Championship 2024," added Tabernilla.

Aside from the gold medal and trophy, Tabernilla got his first International Master norm and outright FIDE Master title for winning the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE week-long event.
However, Tabernilla needed to raise his standard rating 1793 to 2100 to complete his FM title status.

Burentegsh Aldar of Mongolia, Dianqi Lin of China and Huynh Le Minh Hoang created a triple tie for 2nd to 4th places. Aldar won the silver while Lin grabbed the bronze after the tie break points were applied.

Meanwhile, Jaymiel Piel of the Philippines defeated Ree Herng Shen of Malaysia in the last round to win the boys’ under-14 crown.

The undefeated Piel from Ternate, Cavite collected 7.5 points on 6 wins and 3 draws to win the gold medal. He also won outright FM titlesbut needed to raise his standard rating 1805 to 2100 to complete his FM title status.

Kavin Mohan of Malaysia took the silver with 7.0 points while Zev Ganganbars of Mongolia wound up third for the bronze medal after beating fellow 6.5 pointers and fourth placer Gongpu Cheng of China in the tie break points.-Marlon Bernardino-
