T-Wolves Tie, Thunder Surpasses 2022-23 Season Total Wins With Two Dozens Games Remaining

PhilBoxing.com

With about two dozens of games still to be played in the current regular season, the Minnesota Timberwolves have tied their total 42 wins while the OKC Thunder has surpassed theirs of 41 in the 2022-23 season as the two teams continued to pace the Western Conference standing.

Currently #1 and #2 in the West with just half a game separating them, the Timberwolves finished at eight place last season with a 42-40 record while the Thunder was tenth at 40-42. Both squads qualified for the then newly instituted play-in tournament for the final 7th and 8th seeding.

Minnesota lost in overtime, 108-102 to the Los Angeles Lakers which got the 7th seeding. OKC won over New Orleans for the right to face the Timberwolves for the final 8th seeding. The Timberwolves defeated OKC 120-95 to win the final 8th seeding in the playoffs in the West.

As it turned out, the Timberwolves were pitted against #1 seed Denver Nuggets and were beaten and eliminated. The Lakers however progressed until the Conference finals where they were swept in four games by Denver which eventually won the season championship against the East finalists, the Miami Heat.

This season, it is OKC that showed the greatest improvement as the Thunder did not even crack top ten teams in the West in the 2021-22 season.

Biggest contributing factors of the Thunder surge this current season are the rise of Shai Gilgeous Alexander as potentially the league's newest superstar after getting traded by the Los Angeles Clippers for Paul George and the emergence of young center Chet Holmsgren, one of the only four players to have scored 500 triples and 500 blocks in a season.

Meanwhile, the Timberwolves are reaping the dividends of putting together arguably the most potent twin towers in the league in Rudy Gobert and Karl Anthony Towns. Anthony Edwards is also showing great maturity for his age in contributing in points production and also in other departments.

Minnesota with its current 42-17 record is at solo first in the West. But at 41-17, OKC is just a won game back at second.
