En Memoria De Javier Capetillo Hernandez Septiembre 16, 1950 - Agosto 3, 2023 By Emmanuel Rivera, RRT PhilBoxing.com Mon, 21 Aug 2023 En Memoria De Javier Capetillo Hernandez Septiembre 16, 1950 - Agosto 3, 2023 Javier Capetillo Hernandez, Sr.— the boxing trainer, mentor and namesake of Capetillo Boxing Academy— passed away on August 3, 2023 in Southern California. Known to the fight game as ‘El General’, he mentored troubled youth in an out of the squared circle, and led 9 of them to world titles. “To know Señor Capetillo is to know a man of God, a relentless, hardworking coach, a loving family man, devoted husband, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather,” this according to family and friends who laid him to rest in Southern California. Nate Wren, resident photographer for the prestigious West Coast Boxing Hall of Fame and one of El General’s grateful students, shared his thoughts for his late mentor. “Today has been a most difficult day as I came to say goodbye to one of my best friends. He was one of the few people I could truly call a friend. On one of the sad final days of this summer, I said farewell to one of the last great old school boxing trainers in the history of Los Angeles in a packed funeral home. Many people came to say goodbye to a truly great man and one of the most underrated boxing trainers of our time and to share their memories of a truly great man. “One of my only regrets is that I wish I had had more time with him. “For me, how do you say goodbye to the greatest father figure, mentor, trainer, friend and best person you ever knew? Even in death, “El General” Javier Capetillo Sr. continues to give the countless lives he touched over the years. The things he did for me were truly inspiring. He might not have had very much, but he had a heart for miles and an enormous spirit he could lift even the dead and light a fire under just about anyone. “He was a once in a lifetime person, a great leader, a trainer of champions, and a father and grandpa. He was the kind of person that would give you his last dollar from a generous and selfless heart that was truly second to none. Words can’t describe the greatness of such a talented and kind man. “So, on this difficult and sad day, the best thing you could do when things get difficult and unbearable for you is just keep fighting because that’s what he would want you to do. Give everything you have within you for “El General” Javier Capetillo Sr. “This is one of the saddest days in the history of boxing in Los Angeles,” Nate Wren lamented.
