The 6-foot-11, 25-year-old Markannen got the nod from coach Will Hardy who told NBA.com, “Obviously, Lauri had an amazing game for us. He really pushed us into the lead.” Jarred Vanderbilt added 18 points and 13 rebounds, Filipino-American star guard Jordan Clarkson scored 21, and Malik Beasley led the bench squad with 17 points. The Jazz only led Detroit 61-60 after 2 quarters and outscored Detroit 65-51 in the second half. Utah had at least 30 points in all four quarters and led by as much as 22 points. As a team, Utah made 47-of-93 shots (50.5% FG) and 20-of-46 treys (43.5% 3-PT). They made more dishes, 27-22, to make up for less fast break points, 2-10, and less points in the paint 48-54. Utah halted a 2-game slide, having lost its previous two games by an average of 24.5 points, including a 122-99 defeat Monday in Cleveland. In a fruitless effort, Detroit made a commensurate 41-of-81 shots (50.6% FG) and a paltry 9-of-25 treys (36% 3-PT). They were competitive, briefly led by 3 points, were more aggressive out blocking Utah, 5-1 and also scored more free throw points, 20-12. Point guard Jaden Ivey dropped 30 points with 4 rebounds and 5 assists, Bojan Bogdanovic and Jalen Duren each had 15, Marvin Bagley III scored 10 points. The Pistons are now 8-25 and are 5th in the Central division while the surging Jazz are now 18-16 and 3rd in the Northwest division. “We're going to score, but we have to take some pride in sitting down and guarding someone…If you don't play with that conviction against Utah, they are going to hit those shots on you,” Pistons coach Dwane Casey was quoted by NBA.com.
