Awetin, Illustrisimo Win in Cebu! By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Wed, 14 May 2008 Robert Awetin of the Elaba Stable and Ryan Illustrisimo of Chao Sy Stable both looked promising in their contrasting wins last night in San Fernando, Cebu. The event, which was graced by WBO minimumweight world champion Donnie Nietes and the hugely-popular AJ 'Bazooka' Banal, was presented by ALA Promotions, Mabuhay FilCement, Mayor Neneth Reluya, Congressman Eduardo Gullas and RDAK Transport. Awetin survived an early scare to score two knockdowns against Roy Sumugat of Bacolod to notch a fine technical knockout win in the opening round. Illustrisimo of Bantayan Island displayed resolve in outpointing a very durable Amer Cano of Bohol in their four-round tussle. Minimumweights Powell Balaba of Tagbilaran and Jonel Busano of Elaba Stable in Bohol gave a very exciting give-and-take fight before their match was declared a majority draw. Ronilo Lawis of San Miguel, Bohol stopped Jagna's Alvin Edquelang in the first round. Saddam Barambangan of General Santos City salvaged a majority draw with Bacolod City's Jake Servania. "We at Mabuhay Fil-Cement are among the many who are inspired by the triumph of Manny Pacquiao. We desire to also inspire the youth of our town to go into boxing instead of drugs by bringing quality boxing thru ALA Promotions, right in their backyard. We want to be San Fernando's partner not only in sports but also in pushing socio-economic development to the fore," said Neil Papas, Community Relations Consultant of Mabuhay Fil-Cement Inc. Papas was also cited by the organizers for giving AJ Banal his moniker "Bazooka" which was approved and later used by sportsman Antonio L. Aldeguer for his ward.
