“Choko” Rodriguez Looks for Revenge

PhilBoxing.com

Ever since early 2018 strawweight top world title contender Abraham “Choko” Rodriguez (27-3, 13KO) has lived with a thorn on his side. Three years ago in Mexico City, Rodriguez of Tijuana, Mexico, suffered his first loss as a professional via a technical knockout. After suffering a cut over his left eye early on against Alejandro “Pacquiao” Villaseñor (15-4, 6KO), the scheduled eight round fight was stopped after six. Referee Alfredo Uruzquieta called the cut a result of a punch giving Rodriguez the loss.

“Choko” disagrees.

“It was a from a head butt, I felt I could continue but the doctor stopped the fight,” Rodriguez said of his first loss. “I felt I was winning the fight and could continue. It took me some time to overcome that loss and especially the way it happened.”

Now Rodriguez will have the opportunity to avenge the loss when on Friday, June 25th, Rodriguez will face Villaseñor of Apatzingán, Mexico, on “Fight Night at the Border”. The scheduled eight rounder is presented by Jab Promotions of Frank Carrillo and televised live in Latin America by ESPN Knockout.

The multi-bout fight card will take place at the Grand Hotel in Tijuana, Mexico.

“I am very happy my team has been able to secure me this rematch,” Rodriguez said of his next fight. “Like I mentioned that loss affected me and I have turned the page but I would love to avenge it just like I would like in time to avenge the rest of my losses.”

Later in 2018 Rodriguez had his first opportunity for a world title when he challenged hard-hitting Angel “Tito” Acosta for the WBO light flyweight title. Rodriguez was stopped in the second round.

“He caught me with a very good punch, that is the risk in this sport,” he explained. “I had a great camp for that fight and felt strong even though it wasn’t in my weight class. Can’t take anything away from Acosta, he is very strong.”

In his last fight Rodriguez took another world title opportunity but with very short notice and nearly 10 pounds over his natural weight. Last February Rodriguez stepped into an interim WBC flyweight title fight against the experienced McWilliams Arroyo in the semi-main event for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez win over Avni Yildirim in Miami, Florida, live on DAZN.

“I knew the odds were stacked against me, I literally had two days’ notice but I was training for a fight a month away,” Rodriguez said of why he took the fight. “I took the fight because it was a great opportunity, on the semi-main event to one of the biggest events of the year. I wanted to show Mexicans don’t back out of anything and we come to fight.”

Despite Rodriguez was stopped in five, “Choko” was the talk of the boxing world for his display of courage in the fight.

“I appreciate the attention I received after that fight but now it is now time to move forward with my career,” Rodriguez said. “I am ready to work towards a world title shot in my weight class, 105 pounds, and a win over Villaseñor is my first step towards that. I expect that opportunity before the end of the year.”
