Benavidez (R) throws a jab at Ellis.
WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez upped his meticulous record to 24 and 0 with a masterful victory over the game Ronald Ellis at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CN Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) televised on Showtime.
Ellis, from Lynn, Massachusets, started fast in the opening round, throwing stiff jabs and combination thats held Benavidez's attack. But after the first round, Benavidez, from Phoenix, AZ, asserted himself and it's all downhill from there for Ellis who never got an opportunity to turn the tide around.
Benavidez totally dictated the tempo and connected with powerful shots to the head and body all night against the retreating Ellis who to his credit never went down. But by the 11th round, Referee Johnny Callas had seen enough punishment received by Ellis and stepped in to stop the contest at 2:03 of the round for a TKO victory by Benavidez.
Benavidez is now nearing his goal to have a superfight with Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez but is targeting IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant next.
Benavidez logged his 21st stoppage victory in 24 fights while Ellis who was stopped for the first time in his career, dropped to 18-2-2, 12KOs.
