Official: Canelo Battles Callum Smith for WBA Super Middleweight World Title Dec 19 By Carlos Costa PhilBoxing.com Wed, 18 Nov 2020 Mexican superstar Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez, regarded by many fans as the world’s #1 pound for pound fighter, will clash against British world champion Callum Smith for the WBA super middleweight world title on Saturday, December 19, the hugely popular Canelo has already confirmed. A really good boxer, Callum Smith, the 168-pound champion of the world boasting a perfect record of 27-0 with 19 KO’s, can’t wait to get in the right to trade heavy artillery against the tough hard-punching bankable Mexican, and punish him. However, for many fans, the more-experienced Canelo has already battled far more formidable, spine-chilling warriors, who on paper appear to be more dangerous than the Briton Callum Smith. The rumble against Canelo is a marquee fight that the 6’3” Callum Smith has so intensively wanted. It is the pinnacle of his boxing career, his far more important battle. A win, will put him in all sport sections’ headlines He finally got the rumble that he wanted. Can he win it, is the question. In contrast, Canelo is the betting super favorite with a shining resumé reflecting 53 wins, only one defeat by points 7 years ago to Floyd Mayweather, plus 2 draws and 36 victories by way of KO. Canelo (means Cinnamon), a world champion in 4 different weight divisions from super welter to light heavyweight, has just recently become a free-agent after settling a legal battle with his former promoter Golden Boy Promotions and with British streaming service DAZN. 🥊 Because of that, Canelo now calls his shots, which is what he wanted as he hasn’t fought in a year, a year that has felt as an eternity for the boxer who use to say “No boxing, no life,” loving to be in the ring against tough opponents. Indeed, the Mexican is so much wanting to make up for the wasted time, eager to climb the ring more often in 2021. For that, he needs to beat the Briton. Canelo Álvarez vs Callum Smith is expected to grab fans interest worldwide, becoming another exciting event for the popular superstar from Guadalajara, México; and who will emerge victorious? That’s to wonder as both 30-year-old fighters need this triumph at this stage in their careers, whether by points or knockout. Will power-puncher Canelo happy to be back in the ring and viciously stop the skilled Briton world champion same as he crushed the fearsome Russian “Krusher” Sergey Kovalev in Las Vegas last year? Or will the undefeated Liverpool-native Callum Smith rock and shock Canelo, generating one the biggest boxing upsets of 2020? Is Callum Smith more lethal than Kovalev or Golovkin? Me, I don’t think so. But we have to wait and see. As you know, in boxing anything can happen. For example, many fans (including me) doubted that the immensely talented and Loma could not be outboxed and defeated by the younger Teófimo López, yet it happened. That’s how boxing is. So on Canelo vs Smith, on December 19, we have to watch it to find out. The stellar clash is promoted by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing live on DAZN. May the Best Man Win.
