NAVARRETE STOPS ELORDE IN THE 4TH ROUND

PhilBoxing.com

Mexican WBO super bantamweight champion Emanuel Navarrete showcased his vaunted power and boxing skillS on Mexican Independence Day weekend as he dominated and stopped Filipino challenger Juan Miguel Elorde in the 4th round of their 12-round scheduled world championship fight on the main undercard of the Tyson Fury vs Otto Wallin heavyweight bout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Saturday night (Sunday in Manila).

Give credit Elorde who came in to fight and being aggressive as he took the first round by connecting a couple of left overhands toward Navarrete who was uncharacteristically quiet in the opening round as he seemed to study his opponent's style. In the second round Navarrete, connected with a left to the body and followed it up with a right uppercut to the chin that visibly hurt Elorde.

In the third, Navarrete started to impose his will by connecting several power punches to the body and head of Elorde capped by a left-right combo that sent Elorde's back towards the ropes forcing Referee Russell Mora to call a knockdown one second before the bell. Elorde, with blood dripping from his nose and was badly hurt, was allowed by his corner to come in for the 4th round. After Elrode was being hit with a couple of hard punches by Navarrete to the head, Referee Mora wisely waved off the fight for a 4th round TKO victory by the Mexican. Time: 26 seconds of the 4th round.

Another easy night for the budding Mexican star Emanuel Navarrete who stopped his Filipino challenger Juan Miguel Elorde in the 4th round at the T-Mobile Arena Saturday night, Sep. 14, 2019.

Navarrete, 24, (29-1-0, 25KOs) is from Mexico City. He rose to prominence by defeating Ghanian star Isaac Dogboe for the WBO super bantam title on Dec. 8, 2018 at the Madison Square Garden in New York. In a rematch he stopped Dogboe in the 12th round to fortify his standing as one of the best champions in the division. A busy fighter who fights four to five times a year, Navarrete knocked out Mexican challenger Francisco de Vaca just last month for the second successful defense of his title. His only loss was against compatriot Daniel Argueta early in his career.

Juan Miguel Elorde, 32, (28-2-0, 15KOs) who is ranked No. 2 by the WBO in the super bantamweight divIsion before the fight, rose to the ranks by defeating a steady diet of Thai and Indonesian journeymen. His only loss came from American Jerry Guevarra on Nov. 11, 2011 on the undercard of the card preceding the third fight Pacquiao and Marquez in the Las Vegas.

Juan Miguel is the son of boxing promoter Johnny Elorde and grandson of Philippine legend and Hall of Famer Gabriel 'The Flash' Elorde.
