MARQUEZ WANTS TO ERASE HIS BIGGEST BLUNDER

PhilBoxing.com

The much anticipated victory over Rocky Juarez has not totally erased the biggest blunder of the career of Juan Manuel Marquez. And the only thing that can pull him through from the dreaded nightmare is to fight Manny Pacquiao again for perhaps the biggest payday of his life.

In 2005, Marquez was stripped of his IBF title, when he failed to defend his crown against Phafrakorb Rakkietgym of Thailand. The fight was already scheduled when it was subjected to purse bid by the International Boxing Federation. It drew no takers and it cost ?Dinamita? his title.

Also during that time, Marquez had a misunderstanding with Top Rank regarding the quality of bouts he had. Bob Arum offered him 1.4 million dollars to fight Erik Morales but he asked for more money and the fight never materialized.

In one of the most bizarre fiscal judgments ever made in professional boxing, Marquez discarded the $750,000 offer for a rematch with Pacquiao. Instead, he took his stuff to Indonesia to challenge WBA featherweight champion but unknown local boxer Chris John, for a meager $31,500, and lost a shocking unanimous decision. The disputed decision led to the Ring Magazine's deletion of Marquez from its pound-for-pound top 10 list.

That was a great tactical blunder for the Mexican who is known for overpricing his services, losing his featherweight title which would complicate further the humiliation.

Today, Pacquiao is a global celebrity and in terms of compensation, Marquez can expect to receive considerably more than the offer for a rematch with The Pacman three years ago. The pay-per-view income will be bigger and better than the previous encounter.

Moments after being officially announced as the winner in the WBC super featherweight title bout with the spirited Juarez, Marquez shouted to the whole world, ?I want Manny Pacquiao!?

At 34, like Barrera and Morales, Marquez has reached the pinnacle of his skills, and has showed modest deterioration of his boxing dexterity during the Juarez bout. For Marquez, there?s no tomorrow for the mega-buck fight with the enigmatic Pacquiao. Time is running out for him and he cannot afford to commit the same error.

Pacquiao is not a world champion but everyone considers him as one of the two best pound for pound fighters in the world. If Marquez would not demand an amount equal to or bigger than Pacquiao?s pay, he is heading for the biggest paycheck of his career and he is out to correct the greatest blunder he had in his lifetime.
