NBA -- Bulls trade Derrick Rose to the Knicks

CHICAGO -- While LeBron James and his merry band of Cavaliers were celebrating their first NBA title around Cleveland, the city of Chicago bade farewell to one of its iconic yet polarizing NBA star.
As first reported by the Chicago Tribune, the Bulls shipped Derrick Rose to the New York Knicks for Robin Lopez, Jose Calderon and Jerian Gtant. New York also received Justin Holiday and a 2017 second round pick.
Rose is in the fifth and final year of a massive $94.8 million contract extension he signed in 2011. His salary in the upcoming season is a staggering $21.3 million. He will become a free agent in July of 2017.
Born and raised in Chicago, where he starred at Simien High, Rose was drafted at No.1 by his hometown Bulls in 2008 and won Rookie of the Year honors in 2009. In 2011, at just 22 years and 6 months of age, Rose became the league's youngest ever MVP winner and ascent to superstardom seemed imminent.
And then sadly, injuries got in the way.
He tore the ACL on his left knee in the 2012 playoffs and he sustained a myriad of other injuries that allowed him to play in just half of the Bulls' regular season games in four years. Last season, at 27, he didn't suffer any major health setback and appeared in 66 games where he averaged 16.4 points and 4.7 assists while shooting 42.7 percent from the field.
While he was battling several injuries and working tirelessly to regain his old form, some fans have turned on Rose. Others simply gave up on him.
If he could control the fate, Rose would rather stay home and win a title for his beloved Bulls. But life doesn't always work that way and given how difficult it's been for him the past four seasons, going to New York is a welcome change of scenery for the once mighty star.
