Mexican stops Oliva in 5th round
By Lito delos Reyes PhilBoxing.com Mon, 02 Mar 2015

FILIPINO boxer Jether Oliva failed in his first attempt to fight in a heavier division as he bowed to a much bigger Mexican Luis Nery last Feb. 28 in Tijuan, Baja California in Mexico.
Oliva?s young manager Jim Claude Manangquil already stopped the fight before the start of the fifth round after realizing his ward was ?really no match? to a much-heavier and bigger opponent.
?Non-sense na isugal ko pa. Stop ko na lang para hindi na siya masaktan pa lalo,? said the 22-year old Manangquil of the Sanman Promotions from General Santos City.
Both fighters earlier tipped the scales at 117 pounds. They were supposed to fight at 112 pounds or flyweight division only.
?Mas lalong lumaki talaga ang kalaban on the fight night,? Manangquil said in a text message.
Oliva, reigning World Boxing Federation Asia-Pacific flyweight champion, was knocked down in the second round by a right straight on the head.
?It was a bad move to go up the next weight. Next time sa 122 na lang talaga,? Manangquil said.
It was only the third loss against 22 wins, 10 by Kos and two draws suffered by Oliva.
The 27-year old Oliva previously beat Indonesian Jemmy Gobel by a unanimous decision to cop the WBF Asia-Pacific flyweight crown last October 5 in Glan, Sarangani Province.
Neri remained undefeated with 16 straight wins with 11 Kos. He previously stopped fellow Mexican Carlos Fontes by an 8th round TKO last Dec. 6.
The fight was promoted by Zanfer Promotions. Oliva was supposed to fight against Amiro Ricablanca in the undercard of the ?Yanig sa T?boli? on March 8 at the T?boli Municipal Gym in T?boli, South Cotabato.
Manangquil said Oliva needs to rest for three months and will later have a tune-up fight before he will defend his title. ? LITO DELOS REYES
