In recognition of his earth-shaking win in South Africa recently, the Games and Amusements Board has accorded newly-crowned WBC International minimumweight kingpin Gabriel Pumar the Boxer of the Month honors for March.
In its latest rankings for March, the GAB cited Pumar's impressive seventh-round dethronement of South African Tshepo Lefele last March 31 in Johannesburg, where the Lapu-Lapu City-raised fighter knocked down Lefele four times en route to a devastating win.
What made the victory even more impressive was the fact that Pumar was fighting in virtual lion's den, and had to buck a vastly underdog status to completely befuddle and out-hustle the shifty Lefele.
The victory kept Pumar's unbeaten slate, and earned for him a P300,000 bonanza from Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Arturo Radaza, who expressed profound joy in seeing a constituent win a world-acclaimed title.
More importantly, the win automatically catapults Pumar into the elite top 15 of the World Boxing Council.
