CANASTOTA, NY - SEPTEMBER 9, 2026 - The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced its flags will fly at half-staff in memory of Hall of Fame lightweight champion Ismael Laguna who passed away on September 8 at the age of 83.
“Ismael Laguna was a hero in his native Panama and entertained boxing fans around the world with his skill and resilience,” said Executive Director Edward Brophy. “The Hall of Fame extends our condolences to his family and joins the boxing world in mourning his passing.”
Born in Colon, Panama, Laguna turned pro in 1960 and twice reigned as lightweight champion; first defeating Hall of Famer Carlos Ortiz in 1965 (W 15) for the WBA / WBC titles and later regaining the titles from Mando Ramos in 1970 (TKO 9). During his legendary career he scored wins over Carlos Hernandez, Guts Ishimatsu and Chango Carmona and drew with Nicolino Locche. A true world champion, the “Tiger of Colon” fought in Venezuela, Ecuador, Brazil, France, Mexico, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and the Philippines. In 1971, he retired with a record of 65-9-1 (37 KOs).
In 2001, Laguna was elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
