EXTREME runners Maria Josephine Yao of Quezon City and Jong Mahinay of Tagum City ruled the 30-kilometer race in the Salomon X Trail Run held last May 7 at Kaputian in Samal Island.

Yao clocked 5 hours and 20 minutes to win the women’s division. Second was Arie Jane Aloy followed by Lizy Ayn Misa.

“It rained last night so it was muddy and slippery,” said Yao.

It was Yao’s first time in Samal and the island trail was extra challenging.

“I was not using the proper shoes for the event,” said Yao, who would scramble sometimes.

Mahinay, on the other hand, had a time of 3 hours and 50 minutes in ruling the men’s division.

Rommnick Tongkaling was second followed by Roberto Cain.

“I have changed because I switched sports to triathlon, duathlon and cycling a long time ago,” said Mahinay.

In the 15K division, Marjones Abugan, 26, of Carmen, Davao del Norte topped the men’s division.

Second was Paul James Zafico followed by Antonio Baguio of Toril.

In the distaff side, Mariel Cantila, a store head of R.O.X. Abreeza emerged as the champion.

She was followed by Razzil Quinanola of Davao City while third was Vanessa Manlosa, a yoga teacher from Davao City.

“We would like to thanked Samal Island headed by City Mayor Al David T. Uy for hosting the race,” said Salomon branch manager Lance Aquino.

A total of 550 runners participated the race that included Barangay Poblacion, Bandera, Kanaan, Tagbaobo and San Isidro.

The awarding ceremony was held at the Kaputian District by Department of Tourism Regional Director Tanya Rabat-Tan, race director Dax Ang and Aquino.
