FORMER San Sebastian College ? Recoletos de Manila top player Louie "Espana" Salvador pocketed the top honors in the Laos International Open Chess Championship 2018 Standard Competition held at the Vansana Hotel in Vientiane, Laos on Saturday.
Salvador, the pride of Novaliches Novelty Chess Club top honcho Sonsea Agonoy and Big Rook Chess Academy (BRCA) boss and famous pianist Nick Cholapat Chongstitwattana, collected eight points on seven wins and two draws to win the top prize US$1,200 in the nine-round FIDE sanctioned tournament.
Salvador, a prodigy of National Master (NM) Homer Cunanan, scored victories over Bruno Burbach of Germany in the first round, Woman Candidate Master Goh Jie Yi of Malaysia in the second round, Maneesorn Kankawee of Thailand in the third round, Fide Master Sauravh Khherdekar of India in the fourth round, Eric Cheah of Malaysia in the fifth round, Collin Hornell of Scotland in the seventh round and Fide Master (FM) Yaaqov Vaingorten of Canada in the eight and penultimate round.
He split the point with International Master (IM) Matthew Tan of the Netherlands in the sixth round and Fide Master (FM) Poompong Wiwatanadate of Thailand in the ninth and final round.
It shall be recalled that last November 25 Salvador also won the Assumption - Big Rook Chess Festival 2018 Under 2200 division, Standard chess tournament held at the Assumption Association Rama 4 Road in Bangkok, Thailand.-Marlon Bernardino-
