FILIPINO Conrado Diaz, a certified United States Chess Federation (USCF) national master, defeated American International Master Elliot Winslow in the seventh round to gain a share of the lead in the 2017 William Lombardy Memorial Tuesday Night Marathon at the Mechanics Institute Chess Club in San Francisco, California, USA.
The win moved Diaz to the top with 6.0 points, tying Paul Whitehead, winner over Josiah Stearman.
The former mainstay of Adamson University chess team, Diaz is the pride of General Trias, Cavite gunning for another major title before year ends.
Whitehead, on the other hand is best remembered finishing tied for first in the 1978 US Junior with future US hall of famers Yaisser Seirawan and John Fedorowicz.
