CHICAGO -- Javier Fortuna of the Dominican Republic improved his unbeaten streak to 26 fights by scoring a devastating 5th round knockout over Abner Cotto of Puerto Rico in the undercard of "The Homecoming" boxing event Saturday night at the UIC Pavilion.
The end came in the 1:32 mark of the fifth round when Fortuna crushed Cotto with a straight left. Cotto, whose record fell to 18-3, valiantly tried to shake off the knockdown but he was counted out, staggering on his feet as the referee reached 10.
It was an action-packed featherweight bout with Cotto willingly trading leather with the undefeated, hard-punching Fortuna of the Sampson Boxing stable.
Fortuna was knocked down in the second round, the same round Cotto was deducted a point for throwing a rabbit punch. Cotto was also penalized a point in the fourt round for a low blow.
The victory was Fortuna's 19th career KO. (AR)
