NBA -- Nuggets hire Brian Shaw as head coach

 Brian Shaw.
CHICAGO -- Brian Shaw is the new head coach of the Denver Nuggets, agreeing to lead a team without a bonafide superstar since the Carmelo Anthony era.
Shaw will replace George Karl, the 2013 NBA Coach of the Year, whom the Nuggets fired following Denver's disappointing first-round playoffs exit at the hands of the Golden State Warriors.
The 47-year-old Shaw spent the last eight years working as an assistant coach, six under the tutelage of Phil Jackson, the 11-time NBA champion and surefire Hall-of-Fame coach. Shaw was also a part of the Indiana Pacers coaching staff for the past two years, helping Indy push the highly-touted Miami Heat to seven games in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Shaw, who was also interviewed by the Los Angeles Clippers and the Brooklyn Nets, beat Lionel Hollins, former coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, Vinny del Negro former coach of the Los Angeles Clippers and San Antonio Spurs assistant Brett Brown, for the Nuggets job.
Brian Shaw inherits a Nuggets team with a promising backcourt of Ty Lawson and Wilson Chandler, who averaged 16.7 ppg and 13.0 ppg respectively in the 2013 season, and a frontcourt boasting of Kenneth Faried (11.5 ppg, 9.2 rpg) and Danilo Gallinari (16.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg).
After earning his due as an assistant, Shaw now has a chance to prove himself as top dog. He will have his hands full, not just in filling the absence left by Karl's departure, but also to lead this team into becoming a perennial playoff contender and at the same time avoid an opening round exit, something the Nuggets have done only once in their last nine postseason trips.
