WORLD POOL MASTERS: ORCOLLO ADVANCES; PAGULAYAN FALTERS

PhilBoxing.com

Manila, Philippines -- 2010 MASTERS CHAMPION Dennis "Robocop" Orcollo cruised into the quarter-finals of the ongoing 2012 World Pool Masters on Sunday at the Hala Legionow in Kielce, Southern Poland.

The Bugsy Promotions mainstay Orcollo stamped his class over World No.1 Kelly Fisher of England, 8-6.

The former fisherman from Bislig, Surigao del Sur Orcollo lost the first rack, as Fisher cued confidently around the table, but then proceeded to win the next five. The English girl then clawed her way back, winning the next two, before going 6-3 down and then winning the next two to get to 5-6.

Orcollo looked a little uneasy but restored his confidence as he won the 12th game with a confident run out. Fisher though, fluked the 9 ball in the next as a missed 3/9 combo missed in the side pocket but the 9 ball crept up table and dropped.

It was her last hurrah though as a dry break and open table gave Orcollo the chance he needed to close out the match.

Orcollo will meet Mika Immonen of Finland in the next round, who brought downed Radoslaw Babica of Poland, 8-7.

?It?s going to be tough in my next match, but I believe I have a great chance to win,? said Orcollo, whose stint here is being supported by sportsman/businessman Ceferino "Perry" Mariano of Bugsy Promotions, Malungai Life Oil, Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines and Hermes Sports Bar.

?Dennis (Orcollo) is very focused in his game and feeling confident, kaya kumpiyansa ako na mananalo siya sa next game n'ya,? said Bugsy Promotions top honcho Ceferino "Perry" Mariano.

Meanwhile, Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan got an early boot in the 2012 World Pool Masters as he bowed to Mateusz Sniegocki of Poland, 6-8, in the Final Eight. Sniegocki became the first player to make it through to the semi-finals after beating Pagulayan.

It was a proper scrap with neither player showing a whole lot of fluency and when the Canadian Filipino Pagulayan opened up a 4-1 and then 5-2 lead, the crowd started to quieten down. Sniegocki had to dig deep and find something and he did as the cashed in on some sloppy play from his opponent to claw the racks back.

A break and run from the Poznan man in the 10th game saw the match go to 5-5 as Sniegocki grew in confidence. Pagulayan regained the lead in the next but ran horrendously out of position with just two balls left on the table and the Pole made it 6-6 in what was anyone?s match. The Pole took the next to reach the hill and just when he needed it, he played a perfect break and run to reach the semi-finals where he will play either Immonen or Orcollo. Pagulayan won his first match against Raj Hundal of India, 8-6.

Meanwhile, Nick Van Den Berg of the Netherlands and Wojciech Szewcyk of Poland hurdled their respective assignments to face each other in the round-of-8. Van Den Berg nipped Omar Al Shaheen of Kuwait, 8-4, while Szewcyk edged Ko Pin-yi of Chinese-Taipei, 8-7.

In other matches saw, Tony Drago of Malta dealt Darren Appleton of England, 8-6, while Karol Skowerski of Poland crushed Shane Van Boening of the United States, 8-2. Drago and Skowerski will meet in the next round.

The tournament has a total prize fund of $66,000 with the winner getting $20,000 top purse.
