VILORIA DEFENDS TITLE AGAINST OMAR NINO
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 11 Jul 2006
WBC light flyweight champion Brian Viloria will defend his title against world-rated challenger Omar Nino of Mexico on a big Top Rank championship fight card at the Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on August 10.
Viloria whose parents are from Ilocos Norte is the only reigning Filipino world champion although he spent most of his years in Hawaii and represented the United States in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
The undefeated Viloria has a record of 19-0 with 12 knockouts while Nino has a record of 23-2-1 with 10 knockouts. Viloria is coming off a unanimous twelve round decision over former world champion Jose Antonio Aguirre of Mexico. Viloria hurt his right hand in that fight and had to lay off for several months before he resumed training at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach.
Nino has had four successive wins, the latest being a ten round unanimous decision over Juan Martin Zepeda last May 19, after suffering a 9th round knockout at the hands of Juan Alberto Rosas in February 2004. Nino also lost by a 5th round KO to Gilberto Keb Baas in September 1998 while Viloria scored an 11th round knockout over Keb Baas in 2004.
WBC president Jose Sulaiman in an email to this reporter said that the winner of the Viloria-Nino title fight on August 10 is mandated to fight the winner of the WBC Interim title fight between No.1 ranked Juanito Rubillar (39-9-7, 17 KO’s)of the Philippines and No.2 ranked Wandee Singwancha (48-7-1, 10 KO’s) of Thailand on July 18 in Bangkok.
