Complete undercard results for Gamboa - Ponce de Leon in Atlantic City

PhilBoxing.com

Atlantic City, New Jersey - The following are the results of the undercard fights for Top Rank Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions and HBO's presentation of Yuriorkis Gamboa - Daniel Ponce de Leon at the Boardwalk Hall of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The night opened with an 8 round Super Lightweight bout between Angel Rios 9-6 (6 KO's) of Bronx, NY against unbeaten Terrance Crawford 14-0, (11 KO's) of Omaha, NE. Crawford used his stiff jab to keep Rios at bay in the early rounds. Rios kept advancing against the taller opponent occasionally catching Crawford with his right hand but he also gets hit a lot with combinations to the body and head thrown by Crawford. The two exchanged in the last two rounds of the fight when Crawford engaged Rios who kept egging him to "Come on, come on." The tough Rios finished the match against a fighter who knocked out his last 10 opponents in the ring. The scores were 80-72 twice and 80-71.

Super Bantamweight Miguel Cartagena 2-0 (1 KO) of Philadelphia, PA scored the first knock out of the evening over Christian Cruz 3-2-0-1 (3 KO's) of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Cartagena's combos of head and body shots took their toll early on Cruz who is unable to answer back. Cartagena dropped Cruz in the second round with head and body combinations ending with a left hook to the body that dropped Cruz's mouthpiece and him eventually. Referee David Fields halted the fight at the 2 minute and 20 second mark of the fight giving Cartagena the 3rd straight victory of his young career.

Luis Cruz of Las Piedras, Puerto Rico 18-0 (14 KO's) kept his undefeated record with a spectacular 6th round KO of Antonio Davis 28-6 (13 KO's) of Atlanta, GA. Davis tasted the canvass twice courtesy of a strong right hand that pushed him back to the ropes in the 2nd round and a hard uppercut in the 5th. He survived both counts but the third and final knockdown in round 6 from yet another hard right uppercut by Cruz sent Davis sprawling in the canvass. The fight ended in that instant. The time of the knockout was 1:39. The unbeaten Super Featherweight who is being promoted by light middleweight champ Miguel Cotto's promotional company improved to 19-0, 15 of it coming by knockouts.

It was an exciting battle between two welterweights in Calvin Odom 15-10 (11 KO's) of Inglewood, CA and Wale Omotoso 18-0 (16 KO's) of Lagos, Nigeria. Odom stunned Omotoso with a left hook in the opening round of the fight dropping the unbeaten Omotoso in the canvass early. Omotoso came back in the second round rocking the lanky Odom with hard shots to the head and body which had him leaning against the ropes. Omatoso scored a knockdown of his own in the 4th round with a blend of left to right headshots. Odom quickly got up from the count and survived the round despite receiving additional punishment from the unbeaten Nigerian. The fight ended in round number 5 after referee Sparkle Lee stepped in the 33 second mark of the round awarding a TKO victory to Omotoso much to the disappointment and chagrin of the crowd. Lee was booed by the frustrated crowd after the said stoppage.

The opener to the main event was a battle of Jersey boys pitting New Brunswick's Jorge Diaz 15-1 (9 KOs) against Irvington's Rafael Lora 11-6 (5 KOs). Diaz scored an arguable knockdown in the second round of the featherweight fight after he hit Lora while his back was against him. Lora retaliated in the succeeding round catching Diaz several times but also hitting him with a low blow. The end of the fight was equally controversial when Lora was dropped from another punch to the back of his head by Diaz. Diaz was warned by referee Sparkle Lee and she allowed the slouched Lora to recuperate from the punch. Lora was unable to get back up on his feet and the fight was halted from there on. A TKO victory was awarded to Diaz which baffled the crowd and the press at ringside. The time was 2:49 of round number 3.
