Breaking news! A not so successful stint for Filipino boxers in Japan
By Ron Galarpe PhilBoxing.com Sun, 04 Dec 2005
News just came in that earlier this night “Gentle Giant” Rev Santillan handled by Rex “Wakee” Salud, regained his OPBF welterweight title via 8th round KO over Kazuhiko Hidaka of Japan held at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo. It was sweet revenge for Santillan who lost the same crown to the same fighter at the same venue last March 19 of this year.
In a separate venue held also in Japan this time in Osaka, only one of the three ALA boys won their bouts against Japanese opponents.
Welterweight Dondon Sultan now 10-6-2, 5 KOs won via 9th round KO over Taisei Marumoto now 18-6-1.
Minimumweigh 18-year old Rollen Del Castillo lost his bout to former WBC minimumweight champion Katsunari Takayama. The Japanese Takayama who earned a win over highly regarded Isaac Bustos of Mexico, beat Del Castillo via technical decision in the 8h round. The bout was stopped due to an accidental head butt suffered by Del Castillo. The scores were 74-79, 74-79, and 75-78 all for the Japanese at the time of the stoppage.
Finally, current Pan African junior champion and WBO #4, WBA#7 and IBF#3 junior flyweight ranked Bert Batawang lost a 2nd round TKO to Hiroyuki Hisataka. The Japanese is now 12-3-1 4 KOs, while Batawang fell to 35-12-3, 28 KOs. It was a sorry loss to Batawang as he is getting nearer to a world title match due to the high ranking given to him by the WBO and IBF.
Details of these fights to follow.
