Bautista vs Mexican reset due to injury By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Fri, 13 May 2005 The much-awaited scuffle and historic battle between the first ever Mexican to fight in Cebu, Gilberto Bolanos and WBO Asia-Pacific bantam champ Rey ?Boom-Boom? Bautista has been reset from June 4 to June 11, 2005 at the fully-airconditioned Mandaue Sports Complex. The one-week postponement was caused by a cut--eye injury suffered by the teen-age boxing sensation Bautista--due to an accidental head butt during a sparring session with RP No. 3 bantamweight contender Pedro Malco at the ALA Boxing Gym. Although the cut is only a minor injury, chief trainer Edito Villamor did not want to take any chances and asked for a week postponement. ?The cut is rather small and no cause to worry but knowing that the Mexican is a heavy-hitter, a punch could reopen the cut if it is not completely healed,? warns the cautious Villamor. The 27-year-old Mexican carries a fearsome fight record with all his wins coming by way of knockouts. ?Gilberto Bolanos is one fighter who loses his fights if he fails to knockout his opponents. He does not like to win by decision because he is a street fighter,? disclosed Sammy Gello-ani, the promoter of ?EL GRAN COMBATE? boxing extravaganza. The reigning WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight champion, Rey ?Boom-Boom? Bautista is under a heavy training regimen with emphasis on defense in anticipation of his bomb-throwing war with the Mexican hitman. Movie and TV stars are expected to attend the grand battle of Bautista and Bolanos since the fight will be televised by VIVA Sports with the VIVA Hot Babes in attendance and it will be shown on the top-rated weekly show Main Event at 1:00 pm the following day after the fight. It will be a star-studded event never yet witnessed in Cebu fistic scene. Meanwhile, the City Government of Mandaue through the initiative of Ms. Cheryl Ouano, chairperson of the Mandaue Sports Commission, has once again assured the classic encounter of Bautista and Bolanos with their full support as they have done so with other promotions in the past. International promoter Sammy Gello-ani has assured the early sales of tickets to prevent another panic-buying incidents similar to the last fight of Bautista against the African Vuyisile Bebe.
