KHAN CAPTURES WBA LIGHT WELTER CROWN
By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Sun, 19 Jul 2009
UK poster boy Amir Khan has captured the WBA light welterweight title at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, England tonight by dominating the defending champion Andriy Kotelnik of Ukraine. The judges' scores were 120-108, 118-111, 118-111 all for the speedy and slick punching Bolton prize fighter who kept the bull-strong Kotelnik at bay all night with effective jabs and combinations.
It was a tremendous comeback by Khan who got kayoed at 54 seconds of the first round by Breidis Prescott in the same arena in September last year. After that forgettable night, Khan went to future hall-of-famer trainer Freddie Roach for guidance who led him to a world title after only three fights since that defeat.
Khan has now improved to 21-1-0 with 15 KOs while Kotelnik has dropped to 31-3-1 (13KO) suffering his first defeat in 5 years and unsuccessfully defending his crown for the 4th time.
