DONAIRE SR CREDITED AS KATSIDIS CUTMAN
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Mon, 02 Feb 2009

Renowned trainer Nonito Donaire Sr was the silent worker who made sure Australia's Michael Katsidis did not lose on technicality Saturday evening, and was praised by no less than manager Brendon Smith for his efforts.
"He did great tonight. We owe him a lot," said Smith when interviewed, referring to Donaire's successful control of the bad cut on the head and right eyelid suffered by Katsidis during the fight.
Katsidis is known as an easy bleeder, suffering cuts in practically all his big fights involving Joel Casamayor, Juan Diaz, and even against Filipino Czar Amonsot.
Saturday night was no exception, as although he was clearly the dominant fighter against Spain's Hugo Ramirez, the Towoomba, Australia fighter was still cut badly.
Filipino trainer Bruce Lerio, who assisted Team Katsidis during the fight, noted that the cut on Katsidis' head caused by a wayward Ramirez elbow was so severe it could have caused the fighter the victory.
"The cut on the head was really big. Napa bilib talaga kami lahat kay Coach Donaire. Ang galing mag control ng cut," said Lerio.
Even Katsidis' trainer Steve Curin was also amazed at how Donaire seemed to have worked wonder on the two cuts, telling Donaire that he might still be tapped for Katsidis' next fight.
"I am here to prove that Filipinos can also do good as cutmen. I used to also serve as cutman to my sons' fights, so the job is very familiar to me," said the elder Donaire, who is currently busy training fighters at the Yani Sta. Cruz Gym in Talisay City, Cebu.
