Legaria captures MPBF super feather crown

PhilBoxing.com

MAASIM, Sarangani (January 15) ? Elmer Legaria bucked a slow start and dropped Rene Bucag twice with wicked body shots en route to a technical knockout win to capture the vacant Mindanao super featherweight title.

Legaria knocked down Bucag twice in the sixth round with powerful hooks to the body prompting the referee to call it a night for Bucag at the 2:36 second mark in the sixth round.

Legaria, a prot?g? of Maasim Mayor Jojo Lopez, caught Bucag with two hooks to the body midway through the fateful round and dropped his opponent to his knees.

After the mandatory eight-count, the two again exchanged body blows.

The new MPBF champ however drove Bucag in the neutral corner where he finished off the fast-fading pug from Kidapawan City.

Bucag dropped on all fours and was up at the count of eight. The referee however waived his hands to end the bout after seeing Bucag no longer fit to continue.

In the main supporting bout, Dondon Jimenea, a late replacement for no-show Fernando Lumacad, made a short work out over Arnold Ontojo whom he caught with a right straight to the solar plexus in the first round.

Other abbreviated bouts in the undercard include a 6th round technical decision win by Marvin Tampus of Cebu over Phil Ancamor of Cagayan de Oro City and Arwin Ada's exciting 5th-round knockout win over John Rey Pasaylo.

Up and coming light flyweight sensation Marlon Tapales of Lanao del Norte showed class despite figuring in only his seventh fight as a professional by eking out a unanimous decision victory over against hard-punching Ryan Tampus of Wakee Salud Stable.

It was his seventh win in as many fights with five of those wins coming via stoppage.

His eight-round exciting bout with Tampus was voted as the best fight in the Boxing for Peace card promoted by Mayhor Lopez's IML Sports Promotion.

Alvin Baes, also a boxer under Mayor Lopez's Maasim Boxing Team stable, needed only 19 seconds in the second round to stop Wennie Bartiquil of Cagayan de Oro.

Other results: Pajoy Trojillo (IML Stable) improved his unblemished record to five wins by knocking out Elmer Colve in the 4th round, Dondee Pumar won via technical decision over Navarrez in the third and Weljan Ugbaniel kept his undefeated record with a unanimous decision win against McDo Lungay.
