Denver Shoots Self in Foot, Loses to SA in Upset, 121-120
By Teodoro Medina Reynoso PhilBoxing.com Sat, 13 Apr 2024

As was feared, the Denver Nuggets went down in an upset on the road, losing 121-120 to the San Antonio Spurs (not Utah Jazz as reported yesterday) dropping down to third in the West as both Oklahoma and Minnesota won.
The Thunder defeated the visiting Giannis Atentokoumpo-less Milwaukee Bucks, 125-107 while the Timberwolves beat the Atlanta Hawks also at home 109-106.
The Nuggets are actually tied with the Thunder and the Timberwolves at 56-25 but the two latter teams have better season record against or better division record than Denver hence their higher placing.
The three have one play dates left and the only way the Nuggets could end up as the top team is for both Thunder and Timberwolves lose their games while Denver win its game against the Memphis Grizzlies.
OKC will be up against the Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota against the Phoenix Suns in their final games.
The loss to San Antonio today was certainly a shocker as Denver has routinely beaten the Spurs in their three previous meetings this season.
But the Spurs surprised the Nuggets this time by fielding their two other big men Sandro Mamukelashvili and Zach Collins to support their ace rookie center Victor Wembenyama and shooting better from the field, including the three points area.
Wembenyama delivered better numbers than Nikola Jokic, scoring 34 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists as against Jokic's 22, 7 and 12. Mamukelashvili scored 21 points and 12 boards while Collins chipped in 15 points and 6 rebounds. Julian Champaign and Tre Jones poured 14 points each while Devonte Graham contributed 11 in the Spurs win.
Jamal Murray topped for Denver with 35 points supported by Michael Porter Jr (15) , Aaron Gordon (13) and Chris Braun (11).
