Summer Olympic federations distance themselves from IBA and call for a new boxing body
By Gabriel F. Cordero PhilBoxing.com Thu, 11 Apr 2024
The Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), the body of Olympic sports bodies, has announced the exclusion of the AIB from its list of member associations.
On April 3, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed that the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to withdraw its recognition of the IBA was legal.
The ASOIF, after extensive consultation, has decided to withdraw membership from the boxing body based on knowledge of the problems with the finances, governance and ethics of the IBA.
ASOIF President Francesco Ricci Bitti told the SportAccord conference in Birmingham, UK, that national boxing federations and national Olympic committees must decide to find a suitable replacement for the IBA by 2025 at the latest.
Likewise, the 48th General Assembly of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) meeting in Birmingham, United Kingdom has unanimously elected Ingmar De Vos of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) as its next president.
The third term of current President Francesco Ricci Bitti will end on December 31, 2024. Ingmar De Vos ran unopposed and was elected by secret ballot for a four-year term, starting January 1, 2025.
