Ferriol climbs to second place in Penang Chess Open

Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia---National Master Gerald Ferriol of the Philippines scored back-to-back wins after beating Maximiliano Marrhuimawan of Indonesia in Tuesday’s fourth round of the 4th Penang Chess Open Championship 2024 at the St. Xavier's Institution in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia.

Ferriol improved to 3.5 points in four outings, to grab the solo second place in the nine round FIDE standard rated tournament that offers 2,500 Malaysian Ringgit to the champion, organized by Atty. See Swee Siee and Madam InHooi Teh of Penang Chess Association.

“Mahirap y’ung laro pero pinilit ko talagang manalo,” said Ferriol, who defeated Paul S. Eggers of the USA in the third round.

Ferriol, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration graduate Student at University of Santo Tomas, defeated Marrhuimawan in 34 moves of Four Knights Scotch Game using the white pieces.

The 16-year-old Marrhuimawan, earlier beat International Master Angelo Abundo Young and FIDE Master Christopher Castellano, both from the Philippines in Round 2 and Round 3, respectively.

Top seed FIDE Master Yu Tian Poh of Malaysia defeated countryman Xin Hao Looi to remain on top with 4.0 points.

Shanjay Ram Pragaesh of Malaysia upset countryman FIDE Master Chuin Hoong Ronnie Lim to share with Ferriol for 2nd and 3rd places with 4.5 points apiece.

Reigning back to back Asian Senior 65 over category champion International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad of the Philippines bounced back by beating Jason Warren Likoh of Malaysia to score 3.0 points and share 4th to 9th places together with Castellano.
In the fifth round, Ferriol was set to play Castellano, while Poh went up against Pragaesh and Looi faced Chua.-Marlon Bernardino-
