Imus City, Cavite---Jirah Floravie Cutiyog, a Grade 9 student of Bethel Academy of General Trias Cavite, swept her assignments and scored 6.0 points to top the 6th IACG (Inter-Agency Chess Group) Invitational Chess Tournament held at the Robinson Place Imus last Saturday, March 23 in Imus City, Cavite.
Cutiyog opened her campaign with a win over Roberto Biron then followed it up with victories over Resito David, Richfield Rivera, Lourecel Hernandez Ecot, Renie Malupa and Jerome Angelo Aragones.
The 15-year-old chess wizard's run was a testament of her mastery in the Opening under the guidance of coach Arena Fide Master Ederwin Estavillo.
"A big boost of confidence for winning this tournament. Lalo na't lahat ng nakalaban ko ay pawang mga male chess players," said Cutiyog, who saw action in the 2023 World Youth Chess Championship held in Montesilvano, Italy last November.
Among those who are supporting her chess campaign here and abroad are Mayor Luis Ferrer IV, Vice Mayor Jonas Glyn Labuguen, Cavite Sixth Dist. Rep. Antonio Ferrer, Sports Head Rodolfo Commandante Jr. and Bethel Academy of General Trias Cavite.
Ecot, who lost to Cutiyog in the fourth round, bounced back after beating John Martin Firmalino and John Lee Antonio in the last two rounds to clinch solo second place with 5.0 points.
Malupa, Aragones, Jon Mark Anarna, Biron, Noel Trines Jr. and Genesis Jahk Andres finished behind Cutiyog and Ecot with identical 4.5 points, while Rivera, Gilbert Berongoy, Antonio, Firmalino and Carlito Andres Jr. have 4.0 points each.-Marlon Bernardino-
