1st Marinduque National Chess Open Tournament gets underway on March 9

MANILA---Top Filipino woodpushers around the country will compete for honors when the 1st Marinduque National Chess Open Tournament gets underway on March 9 at the Marinduque Convention Center, Capitol Compound in Boac, Marinduque.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines Regional Director for Region IV, Dr. Alfredo "Fred" Paez, said many masters and top non-masters from Metro Manila, Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao will see action in this Seven Round Swiss System, 20 minutes plus 5 seconds delay time control format which features open and kiddie divisions.

The tournament is sponsored by Gov. Presby Velasco and Rep. Lord Allan Velasco and jointly organized by the Marinduque Chess Association and Boac Knight Chess Club Inc.

"I would like to give thanks to Gov. Presby Velasco and Rep. Lord Allan Velasco for sponsoring the 1st Marinduque National Chess Open Tournament," said Dr. Paez who is also an online Arena Grandmaster.

"Hoping that this is the start of bigger chess events in Marinduque, my hometown," said Dr. Paez, former top player of the multi-titled National University Chess Team during his college days.

Cash prizes await winners with the Open champion taking home P50,000, the runner-up will receive P30,000 while the third-placer will settle for P20,000. The next four chessers will pocket P10,000, P7,000 , P5,000 and P3,000 each, respectively. 7th to 10th placer will earn P2,000 each.

There will be a P2,000 cash prizes each for the category winners for senior, junior, lady and Marinduque.

In the kiddies division, the champion will earn P7,000 while 2nd to 6th placer will pocket P5,000, P3,000, P2,000, P1,000 and P700, in order. 7th to 10th placer will bring home P500 each.

This 2-day (March 9 and 10, 2024) event is FIDE-rated and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP). For further inquires, call or text, Engr.
