PINOY BOXING 11: MARK MAGSAYO FACES MEXICAN ISAAC AVELAR ON DECEMBER 9
By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Thu, 30 Nov 2023

Former WBC world featherweight champion Mark Magsayo will have his first super featherweight fight on December 9, 2023, when he tangles with Isaac Avelar of Aguascalientes, Mexico at the Infinite Reality Studio in Long Beach, California as reported by SunStar Cebu.
The 28-year-old Magsayo moved up to the higher division after suffering two straight losses while fighting as a featherweight.
Magsayo lost his World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight title via a split decision to former WBC super bantamweight champion Rey Vargas of Otumba, Mexico on July 9 last year in San Antonio, Texas.
Magsayo lost in his first defense of the WBC title he grabbed from Gary Russell Jr. on September 21, 2021 by majority decision as he ended Russell's seven-year title reign
Magsayo challenged for the interim WBC featherweight belt against Brandon Figueroa of Weslaco, Texas on March 4 in Ontario, California. He was dominated by Figueroa and lost by a lopsided unanimous decision.
The 26-year-old Avelar, a southpaw and standing 5′ 6″ (168cm), will test Magsayo's mettle in the higher super featherweight division. Avelar has been a veteran of tough opponents in former WBC and WBO super bantamweight world champion Stephen Fulton and former WBA super featherweight titlist Hector Luis Garcia.
Avelar won against Roberto Meza in Ontario, California last year but lost his other four fights in the last three years. He lost to Carlos Orona by TKO, George Acosta by UD, Hector Luis Garcia by UD and Eduardo Ramirez by TKO.
Magsayo is now rated in the WBC super featherweight rankings as No. 6 contender.
Magsayo has a record of 24-2 with 16 knockout wins, while Avelar is 17-6 with 10 knockout victories.
