Italian Boxer Luigi Minchillo Passes Away
By Gabriel F. Cordero PhilBoxing.com Thu, 28 Sep 2023

The passing of former Italian world challenger, Luigi Minchillo, on September 25th has been reported.
Minchillo, a participant in the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, achieved championship titles in both Italy and Europe. Over the course of his career, he competed in the welterweight, super welterweight, and middleweight divisions, coming remarkably close to securing a world championship. His opponents included some of the era's most formidable boxers, such as Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Durán, Thomas Hearns, Maurice Hope, Louis Acaries, and Mike McCallum, among others.
In 1988, Luigi Minchillo retired from boxing with an impressive record of 60 fights, boasting 55 victories, 31 of which were by knockout. His debut in the sport dates back to 1977.
Notably, Minchillo vied for the world title on two occasions. One of these challenges occurred in 1984 for the WBC super welterweight title, where he faced Thomas Hearns, ultimately succumbing to a unanimous decision after 12 rounds. In the same year, he contended for the WBA super welterweight title, but the match ended in a knockout by Mike McCallum during the thirteenth round.
