International Master Angelo Abundo Young rules Grandparents Day Celebration Open Rapid Chess Tournament

MANILA--- International Master (IM) Angelo Abundo Young lorded the Grandparents Day Celebration Open Rapid Chess Tournament dubbed as Dear Lola, Lolo and Apo held on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at the Araneta Center, Farmers Plaza, Cubao, Quezon City.
Young, an 8-time Illinois USA Champion, finished the seven-round Swiss system competition with a near-perfect 6.5 points to rule the 15 minutes plus 5 seconds increment rapid tournament, sponsored by Araneta City, organized by National Chess Federation of the Philippines director Martin "Binky" Gaticales.
He pocketed P7,000 for his winning campaign.

The Tondo, Manila resident Young, displayed his winning intent by winning second straight matches.

He opened his campaign with a hard win against Atty. Cheyzer Crystal Mendoza, followed by another win against Larry Sadic (Round 2).

Young ended his winning streak after absorbing a draw against Jerry Areque in the third round.

Young, who is best remembered placing 8th place in the 2019 World Senior Chess Championships (in the +50 division) in Bucharest, Romania, fought back winning his game against Christopher Megino (Round 4), NM Carlo Magno Rosaupan (Round 5), Ricardo Jimenez (Round 6) and NM Jose Aquino Jr. (Round 7), respectively.

NM Henry Roger Lopez of Panabo City, Davao del Norte finished at second place with the same 6.5 points while 2022 Auckland, New Zealand Asian Senior Champion IM Jose Efren Bagamasbad of Quezon City rounded off the top three with the highest tie break in the huge group of six pointers. NM Lopez and IM Bagamasbad earned P4,000 and P3,000, respectively, as their purses.

"Masayang-masaya ako sa pagkapanalo ko ngayon gabi dito sa Araneta City chess tournament," said the 60 years old Young, who won the the first place and the gold medal during the 2022 Merdeka Chess Festival held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

"Magandang practice ito sa paglahok ko sa Araneta City chess tournament sa nalalapit na 2023 Asian Para Games sa Hangzhou, China sa Oktubre," said the 42 years old Lopez, AB History graduate student at Holy Cross Davao College.

It shall be recalled that Lopez won 1 gold and 2 bronze medals during the 2023 ASEAN Para Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia last June.

The fourth to 8th placers were IM Barlo Nadera of Mandaue City, Noel Azuela of Bacolod City, FM David Elorta of San Andres Bukid, Manila, Jerry Areque of Bocaue, Bulacan and Richard Villaseran of Antipolo City, respectively. All these players scored 6.0 points, but were ranked according to their tie-break points.

Ricardo Jimenez of Mandaluyong City and Dennis San Juan of Pasig City wound up ninth and tenth placers with 5.5 points apiece.
Meanwhile, National Para Athletes Head Coach IA James Infiesto was named top guest player award.

On the other hand, Cheyzer Crystal Mendoza was named the top lady competitor for finishing at 17th place with 5.0 points, while Norberto Reyes was named the top senior woodpusher.

Eumir Isaac Galicia won the top apo award while 5 years old Hakob Dy is the youngest participant.

A total of 157 woodpushers competed in the one-day chess tournament.
