Zafra places 3rd in Estonia Chess tourney

MANILA---Filipino Kim Yutangco Zafra settled for 3rd place at the conclusion of the XXIII Torva-Helme chess tournament in memorium Rein Leppik (Standard Time Control), Sunday, June 4, in Estonia.
The Europe-based Zafra tallied 5.0 points on account of 5 wins and 2 loses in 7 outings.
He finished 3rd after a superior tie-break over Karl Matias Kokk (fourth) and Janis Koops of Estonia (fifth).
“I would like to dedicate my victory to my countrymen. It’s an honor to represent our country,” said Zafra, who hails from Novaliches, Quezon City.
Tonu Rauk of Estonia took the title with 6.5 points followed by 2nd placer Sergei Novikov of Estonia who totes 5.5 points.
Rounding up to the top 11 are sixth Maris Koops (4.5 points), seventh Jun Poltan (4.5 points), eight Ulo Lepik (4.5 points), ninth Vladimir Robaltsenko (4.0 points), tenth Urmas Rosental (4.0 points) and eleventh Andres Tobre of Estonia (4.0 points).
Zafra scored victories over Kert Raide in the first round, Elmar Uprus in the second round, Karl Mattias Kokk in the third round, Andres Tobre in the fifth round and Urmas Rosental in the seventh round.
Zafra yielded to Tonu Rauk of Estonia in the fourth round and Sergei Novikov of Estonia in the sixth round. -Marlon Bernardino-
