Regis Prograis Stops Jose Zepeda in 11: Full Fight Card Report and Photos

PhilBoxing.com

Tonight, at the Dignity Health Sports Center at Carson California Legendz Entertainment held a fight card billed as “Battle of the Best”.

Well, the fighters were not exactly the best but nonetheless the fight card was entertaining.

In the main event, Regis Prograis (28-2-0, 24 KO) of New Orleans, a decided underdog turned the tables over the favorite, Jose Zepeda (35-3-27KO) of La Puente, CA. The fighters wasted no time and started exchanging heavy booms from the get go. In the third, Zepeda was cut on the right eyebrow and in spite of the valiant efforts of his cutman, the bleeding persisted throughout the fight. Prograis took over the fight after that as Zepeda started to fade towards the championship rounds. It was just then a matter of time before the fight reaches its conclusion. To his credit Zepeda showed his big heart and continue to fight until he was cornered early in the 11th round. At 59 seconds of the round referee Ray Corona stepped in and stopped the fight with Zepeda down on the seat of his pants.

Prograis wins the WBC Super lightweight belt to become a two-time champion.

In the supporting main event, Yokasta Valle (27-2-0-9KO) of San Jose, Costa Rica snatched the Women’s IBF/WBO Junior Flyweight belts with a majority decision win over Evelyn Bermudez (17-0-1,6KO) of Sta Fe, Argentina disappointing the many fans waving the blue and white that came to support the South American fighter. Many even wore the shirt of Messi, the famous football player from Argentina.

In a battle of heavy weights, Bakhodir Jalolov (12-0-0,12 KO) of Uzbekistan dropped Curtis Harper (14-9-0, 9KO) of Jacksonville, Florida late in the 3rd round and continued to hammer him in the 4th and dropped him again. Although Harper beat the count, the referee thought he had enough and stopped the fight.

Other results:

Charles Conwell (18-0-0,13 KO) of Cleveland, OH stayed undefeated with a majority decision win over Juan Carlos Abreu (25-7-1,23KO) of the Dominican Republic. Scores were 98-92,96-94 and 95-95.

Fernando Vargas Jr. (7-0-0,7 KO) of Oxnard, CA. stopped an overmatched Alejandro Martinez (3-3-3,2KO) of Los Angeles in the 2nd round. Time: 2:40 round 2.

Nathan Rodriguez (10-0-0-7K0) of Pico Rivera, CA dropped Jerson Ortiz (17-6-0,8KO) of Managua, Nicaragua twice but could not finish him off. After 8 rounds of tough boxing Rodriguez won via a unanimous decision, with scores: 79-71, 79-71, 80-70.

Eduardo Estela (14-1-0,9KO) of Montevideo Uruguay dropped the former undefeated South LA boxer, Ruben Torres (19-1-0-16KO) early in the fight but could not finish the job allowing Torres to finish the 8-round fight. Estela won via a split decision with scores of 78-73,76-75 and 73-78.

Amado Vargas (5-0-0,2KO) the second of the Vargas kids on the fight card tonight had his hands full, even dropping Omar Hernandez (1-2-0,0KO) of Santa Clarita, CA but could not finish with a KO. Fight ended via a UD with scores of 35-39,38-36 and 38-36.

Austin Brooks (9-0-0, 3 KO’s) of La Mesa, California stopped Jesus Roman (8-6, 3 KO’s) in three. Brooks floored Roman near the end of the third leading the referee to waive the bout at 2:03 of round 3.

Middleweight Eric Priest (9-0, 7 KO’s) of Los Angeles barely broke a sweat in stopping Luis Vera from Argentina. Priest finished off Vera at 1:45 of round 1.

In the curtain raiser, Jacob MaCalolooy (4-0-0, 3 KO’s) of San Diego scored a second-round knockout over Terrance Jarmon (3-2-0, 1 KO). MaCalolooy dropped Jarmon and Jarmon did not beat the count. Time 1:02 of round 2.
