Labog settles for draw in Asian Junior chess, fortified his International Master title norms bid

PhilBoxing.com

TAGAYTAY CITY---National Master Eric Labog Jr. settled for a truce with compatriot International Master Daniel Quizon using the disadvantageous black pieces creating a 3-way tie for fifth place in the 6th round of the Asian Juniors and Girls Chess Championships at the Knights Templar hotel in Tagaytay City Tuesday.

This fortified his International Master title norms bid of entering the last three rounds of the Boys' section.
The 19-year-old Labog, a freshman student at Immaculada Concepcion College, raised his total to 4.0 points, the same output as Fide Master Daniyal Sapenov of Kazakhstan and Fide Master Arman Hakemi of Iran.

Labog will play against Fide Master FM Eldiar Orozbaev of Kyrgyzstan in the next round.

Chatterjee Utsab of India trounced Dziththauly Ramadhan of Indonesia to climb at 1st to 4th places with 4.5 points, the same output of top seed International Master Saha Neelash of India, International Master Harshavardhan G B of India and International Master Sugar Gan-Erdene of Mongolia.

In other results, Neelash drew with Gan-Erdene while Harshavardhan G B split the point with Sapenov.

In the girls' division, Woman Fide Master Mitra Asgharzadeh of Iran outclassed Woman International Master Ngoc Thuy Duong Bach of Vietnam in a battle of heavyweights to assume the solo lead.
The win enabled Asgharzadeh to grab the solo lead with 5.0 points after Tuesday's hostilities.

Asgharzadeh is now half a point ahead of Bach, Woman International Master Rakshitta Ravi of India and Femil Chelladurai of India, who hammered out similar morale-boosting victories over Mary Joy Tan of the Philippines and top pick Woman International Master Assel Serikbay of Kazakhstan.

Thirty two boys from eleven countries are competing the junior division while 20 players are participating in the 9-round Swiss system tournament among the girls. The championship is organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines on behalf of the Asian Chess Federation.-Marlon Bernardino-
