MANILA---Filipino Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. (Elo 2397) outlasted French Grandmaster Eric Prie (Elo 2356) in the fifth round late Saturday to gain the share of the lead in the Open 50+ division of the 30th FIDE World Senior Individual Chess Championship held at the Hotel Cenacolo in Assisi, Umbria, Italy.
The 60-year-old Antonio needed 47 moves of a Scandinavian Defense using the white pieces to edge his French rival and improved to 4.5 points on four wins and one draw.

He prevailed over Igor Tsyn of Israel in the first round, Fide Master Milan Kolesar of Slovakia in the second round and International Master Hussein Ali Hussein Al-Ali of Iraq in the third round. His only draw came in the fourth round against Grandmaster Ivan Morovic Fernandez of Chile.

Antonio will collide with fellow leader Grandmaster Darcy Lima of Brazil next after the Brazilian split the point with Lithuanian Grandmaster Maxim Novik following four straight victories.
Also with 4.5 points are Novik and German Grandmaster Frank Holzke, who brought down Canadian International Master David H. Cummings.

"Still a long way to go and I hope I can sustain my momentum," said Antonio, whose trip to Italy is being bankrolled by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation , Sen. Bong Go, Col. Jaime Osit Santos and Bayanihan Chess Club Co-Founding Chairman Dr. Joe Balinas.

The 59-year-old Young, an 8-time Illinois USA Champion, remains at 2.5 points. His next opponent Ulises Decozar (Elo 2102) of the United States.

In the Open 65+ class, International Master elect and Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad (Elo 2051) suffered his third straight loss this time to Michael A. Gilbert (Elo 1845) of the United States.

The 66-year-old Bagamasbad, who is fresh from winning the Asian Seniors Chess Championship in the Over 65 category last Oct. 14-22 in Auckland, New Zealand, was stuck at 2.0 points. Bagamasbad will next face Eero Patola (Elo 1830) of Finland.-Marlon Bernardino-
