IM Angelo Abundo Young leads the Gentri City Chess Team

SARDINIA, ITALY---International Master Angelo Abundo Young proved unstoppable at the top board to lead the General Trias City Chess Team into a tie for 12th to 14th places at the conclusion of 1st Masskara Festival National Inter-Provinces, Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championships at the Forest Park Resort in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental on Thursday.
Young, the last minute replacement of Gentri top board player Filipino and United States chess master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr., tallied 6.0 points on account of five wins and two draws in seven outings to went home the gold medal in Board 1.
Young scored victories over Ellan Asuela of General Santos City-MPCL in the first round, over Ramil Canete of Kabasalan in the second round, Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna of Madrid, Surigao Del Sur - Phil Womens Team in the third round, Fide Master Mari Joseph Turqueza of Muntinlupa City Team B in the fourth round and Ronnie Villa of Victorias City in the fifth round.
He split the points with Fide Master Nelson "Elo" Mariano III of Muntinlupa City Team A in the sixth round and Ian Cris Udani of Bacolod City Team A in the seventh and final round.
Backed up by Mayor Jon-Jon Ferer, the General Trias City Chess Team finished with 7 Match Points.
Apart from Young who also topped PEZA Invitational Chess Tournament recently, the General Trias City Chess Team was made up of Lloyd Rubio, Renie Malupa, Israel Landicho, Ederwin Estavillo, Paolo Estavillo, Glycel Afortunado and Delegation Head Mr. Rodolfo Commandante Jr.
General Santos City - MPCL took the title with 12 Match Points in this event hosted by Bacolod City Mayor Alfredo Abelardo "Albee" Benitez.-Marlon Bernardino-
