IM Young leads Gentri chess team to Bacolod By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Thu, 06 Oct 2022 MANILA---Gentri chess team will compete in the 1st Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Albee Benitez Masskara Festival National Inter Provinces, Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championship to be held on Oct. 12-16, 2022 at Forest Park Resort, Barangay Taculing in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. The team will be led by International Master Angelo Abundo Young, the 8-time Illinois (USA) champion and two-time MVP for the Chicago Blaze in the United States Chess League. “I hope to do well in the upcoming Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Albee Benitez Masskara Festival National Inter Provinces, Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championship," said Young, who is also fresh from winning the Group A Division of 1st PEZA Rapid 8-player Invitational Chess Tournament held at the PEZA Double Dragon office last Sept. 30. Actually, Young replaced former Gentri top board player Filipino and United States chess master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. Bernardino is the guardian/coach of Fide Master Alekhine Fabiosa Nouri who is set to represent the country in the 2022 World Juniors Under-20 Chess Championships to be held on Oct.11-23 in Sardinia, Italy. Other members of the Gentri chess squad headed by Mayor Jonjon Ferrer, Delegation Head Mr. Rodolfo Commandante Jr., Coordinator Ms. Glycel Afortunado and Coach AFM Ederwin Estavillo are AFM Loyd Rubio, Renie Malupa, Israel Landicho and ACM Paolo Estavillo. Other Local Government Units who confirmed their participation were Maharlika Pilipinas Chess League, San Carlos City, Escalante City, Silay City, Talisay City, Victorias City, Cadiz City, Bacolod City Team A and B and Engr. Cena, Mansilingan Bacolod City Chess Team. Cash Prizes of more than P600,000.00 are at stake and Mayor Albee Benitez Championship Cup will be awarded to the team winners, individual side tournament and special awards. The event is endorsed by Secretary Benjamin Abalos of the Department of Interior and Local Government for active participation of local Government Units in cooperation with Bacolod YUHOM FOUNDATION INC.
