MANILA---When National Master Ivan Travis Cu is around nobody comes close.

Living up to his billing, the San Juan City-based Cu scored perfect 7.0 points to rule the semifinals of the Under 13 Open National Youth & Schools Chess Championship held last Thursday and Friday, June 30 and July 1, 2022.

The 7-round Swiss tournament was played on Tornelo with a time control of 15 minutes and 10 seconds increment.

The 13-year-old Cu, a Grade 8 pupil of Xavier School, finished 1.5 points ahead of National Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca of Panabo City, Davao del Norte in the 34-man field composed of winners of the leg qualifiers and the country's best rapid young chess players.

Cu scored victories over Louie Nisperos in the first round, Pollux Caleb Reyes in the second round, Richard Haiden Alarma in the third round, Mar Aviel Carredo in the fourth round, National Master Al Basher "Basty" Buto in the fifth round, Yosef Immanuel Morado in the sixth round, Mark Gabriel Usman in the seventh and final round.

Cu, who also dominated the recently concluded National Age Group Chess Championship Semifinals where he played in the U-14 open category last May 28 to 29, 2022.

"NM Ivan Travis Cu secured the gold with 7 wins against his peers. The 7 rounds Swiss tournament was played on Tornelo with a time control of 15 minutes and 10 seconds increment." said father/coach Teddy Cu.

"This win is a strong boost to NM Ivan and represents his second semifinal championship crown after finishing first in the recently concluded National Age Group Chess Championship Semifinals where he played in the U-14 open category last May 28 to 29, 2022." he added.

Other notable winners were Iana Angela Sotaridona of Iloilo City (U13 Girls), Wayne Ruiz of Santa Rosa, Laguna (U15 Open), April Joy Claros of Angeles City, Pampanga (U15 Girls), Jerish John Velarde of Lapu-Lapu City (U17 Open) and Lexie Grace Hernandez of Angeles City, Pampanga (U17 Girls).
