Vic Saludar Keeps Ring Rating at 105; Eight Other Pinoys Still in Elite List

Vic Saludar.

You can't really put a good man down.

After controversially losing his WBA minimumweight title and almost not paid his full fight purse in Dominican Republic a few weeks ago, Vic Saludar got his just due from the highly respected Ring Magazine which retained him at #9 in the 105 lbs class in its year opening divisional rankings.

Somehow acknowledging some issues about his title loss, the Ring Rating Panel refused to drop Saludar from the top ten and put his conqueror, Erick Rosa Pacheco high in his stead. The final consensus was to just drop Saludar to #9 to accommodate Rosa Pacheco who took his previous slot at #8.

Rosa Pacheco's entry claimed a notable casualty however in previous #10 Yudai Shigeoka of Japan who was eased out despite a previous major win. This reduced Japan's top ten bets to just two namely, newly crowned WBO champion Masataka Taniguchi and Yudai's younger brother Ginjiro Shigeoka.

On the other hand, Saludar's retention keeps at three the Philippines representation with IBF titlist Rene Cuarto and ex titleholder Pedro Taduran retaining their respective #6 and #7 spots. The two are scheduled to meet in a title rematch this January in the Philippines.

With very few major fights and hence little movements by way of rating changes by year end, six other Filipino fighters managed to keep their mostly lofty Ring divisional rankings. They include Nonito Donaire and Johnriel Casimero, respectively WBC and WBO bantamweight champion who remained #1 and 2 respectively at 118 lbs behind Ring and unified WBA-IBF champion Naoya Inoue of Japan; IBF super flyweight titlist Jerwin Ancajas and former multi division world champion Donnie Nietes who are #4 and #8 respectively at 115 lbs.

Also keeping their respective slots are former WBO bantamweight champion Marlon Tapales and reigning WBO international featherweight titlist Mark Magsayo who are #9 and #4 at 122 and 126 lbs classes.

Both Tapales and Magsayo are incidentally mandatory challengers to unified WBA-IBF champion Murodjon Akhmadaliev of Uzbekistan and WBC titlist Gary Russell Jr with fights set by first half of the new year.
